Drabble: Ugly Duckling

We're both sleepy from the wine, telly's off and we doze together in front of the fire.

When I wake up again the fire's reduced to glowing embers and the room's cold. Gene's asleep and I go to wake him, but I hesitate...

I gaze on the long length of him stretched out on the couch like that, shadows highlighting his features, and I wish I were an artist so I might capture this moment in time, from the softness of his lips to the exaggerated length of his ridiculous eyelashes.

And to think... I once thought this man ugly.
