Chapter 1 - Spirit Of War
A wave of power swept through Sunnydale as Janus loosed his power and people became their costumes.

A young man who had not actually bought a costume from the chaos mage was also affected, as he had bought a toy pistol to complete his soldier outfit.  The old Greeks have always known that the Fates worked in mysterious ways anything could set a destiny in motion and the Fates had been working towards the return of the old gods for millennia knowing it was the one sure way to restore balance to the world.

From the beginning they had been faced with a daunting task, The Way had destroyed the lessor gods entirely and reduced the major gods to non-corporeal spirits unable to directly channel the energies they had been created to channel and control.  It had been a very effective strategy by The Way as without the gods the world would have torn itself apart but by reducing them to spirit form the gods could no longer directly manipulate the energies of the world in the direction the Fates chose.  Yet they still held off the eventual destruction.  It had taken even the Fates some centuries after the destruction to realise the overall plan of the enemy and when they had done so they were apalled.  Their World they and their fellow Gods were created to regulate had been nutralised simply because this reality had become a battlefield between two opposing powers. Not wanting a third player on the gameboard they the Gods of this universe had been elimimated by the combined effort of both sides.  The fact that this Universe would eventually be destroyed by the created imbalance was unimportant as it would last long enough for their war to be decided.

The Fates knew they had only one chance to save this universe they had to make their fellow Gods corporeal again yet they knew it was an impossible task as the Greek gods were effectively dead reduced to their basic energy matrix.  True the memories remained buried in the matrix but the guiding personalities or godly souls had been long gone forced to move onto the next level of their godly evolution by The Way.  Yet the remaining Godly Matrix were still forced by their nature to purify the energy they were created to control, yet without form or direction their control was fitful at best so the world and the universe limped towards destruction.

Which left the Fates two major problems, to recreate the gods they could not just create new gods to replace the old instead they had to not only somehow give the godly energy matrix that remained not only a corporeal form but a new soul as well.   So the world teetered on the cusp of eternal destruction as the energy without godly direction to channel the world into less destructive paths began to self-destruct.  Meanwhile the Forces calling themselves Ligh and Dark wared on using the mortals and worlds of this universe as their battlefield.

The Chaos mage a devotee of Janus was merely playing that fateful night he had no idea that the Fates had planned it all from the start.  The boy who bought a toy gun to complete the fatigues he wore gave the Fates an opening, the boy had been carefully created a rare being was this mortal, without destiny on the tapestry so he could be given one.  The devotee of Janus had been slack, the Matrix of the Chaos god had been asked to empower the costumes to become the essence of their intent.  So when the boy bought a toy gun and dressed as a warrior it gave them an opening to change the tapestry, instead of being possessed by a generic warrior the Boy was possessed by the godly Matrix of War itself the ultimate warrior the defender of man.  For those few brief hours War walked the Earth once more, yet confined by Janus spell it was forced to act within the confines of the costume.

The Spell ended as all such things do, The Matrix of War retreated, but a destiny had been created, for the boy was now part of War's matrix or perhaps it was more accurate to say the Matrix of War was now part of the Boy.  The Fates relaxed for the first time in millennia, the Boy was now Immortal War, yet he had to evolve and mature into his place in the universe, eventually the two halves of the new god would fully merge.  All the Fates had to do was wait, watch and giggle as the new player, the ultimate wildcard on the tapestry of life took the field.  Finally the third player on the battlefield began to slowly make his presence known and this time Immortal War saw his enemies for what they were and would show no mercy both sides would know his wrath.
