I just wanted to let you know of another fantastic reason to use IN-LIVEN. My daughter whom is teething has been getting dreadful nappy rash (4 teeth through and horrid nappy rash). Our son Rex is aged 14 months and has suffered from severe eczema since he was a few weeks old. 1. lactobacillus kefir a transient bacteria of the human intestine. Found in kefir grains and kefir drink. Facultative anaerobic lactobacilli which produce lactic acid, alcohol(ethanol) or acetic acid and carbon dioxide from carbohydrates. As with other lactic acid bacteria these transient lactobacilli encourage, because of their formation of lactic acid, etc a more acid environment in which there is a strong inhibition of less desirable micro-organisms.

2. lactobacillus acidophilus a natural inhabitant of the human small and large intestine. Found in the intestine of humans and animals, human mouth and vagina. Faculative anaerobic lactobacilli(grow in the presence or absence of air) which produce lactic acid as a main product from carbohydrates. Optimum growth temperture 35-38degrees C. The major beneficial functions of acido-bacteria are: a. they enhance and allow digestion of milk sugar (lactose) by producing the enzyme lactase and generally aid in the digestion of nutrients. b. they are able by some competitive means eg. creation of lactic acid and other inhibitory substances, to suppress undesirable micro-organisms in the intestine. c. some strains act to help destroy hostile invading bacteria by producing natural antibiotic substances. d.

12. Bifido-bacterium longum a natural inhabitant of the human intestine. found in the stools of human infants and adults. A separate biotype fo the B longum occurs in large numbers in the intestines of adolescents and adults. The beneficial roles are similar to those of B. bifidum as: The prevention of colonization of intestine by invading pathogens through competition for nutrients and attachment sites. b. the production of acetic and lactic acids which increase the acidity of the intestine and thereby inhibit undesirable bacteria. c. Assisting in nitrogen retention and weight gain in infants. d. the inhibition of bacteria which can alter nitrates topotentially harmful nitrites. e. the production of B vitamins. If the intestinal microflora is disturbed (and the levels of bifidobacteria decline) under the influence of antibiotics, irradiation of the abdomen with gamma or x-rays, reduced gastric acidity, or stress conditions, the use of supplemental bifidobacteria, or bifidobacteria found in food products, can help in the restoration of the microflora.

Cholesterol is found in every cell membrane in your body, and without it normal metabolic processes would be impossible, but an excessive level of cholesterol in the blood is considered to be one of the main factors wich predisposes towards hardening of the arteries and coronary disease, the number one killer of modern times in Western industrialized countries.
In atherosclerosis the plaques which accumulate on the walls of arteries are largely made up of cholesterol which circulates in the blood as part of particles called low density lipoprotein LDL. the higher the levels of LDL in the bloodstream the faster athoerosclerosis develops. Another form of lipoprotein a high density version HDL is found in plentiful supply in people with low levels of cholesterol, low incidence of atherosclerosis and therefore, of good cardiac health. HDL seems to play an important part in actually removing excessive levels of cholesterol in the blood.
both animal and human studies now show that cultured milk products such as yoghurt and milk to which acidophilus cultures have been added, efficiently lower levels of cholesterol in the blood. Bacteria in the GI tract have the ability to metabolise both hormonal products, and bile salts. It is in these changes of the bile acids that cholesterol is removed.

Acne and skin infections

Dr Robert Siver of Baltimore, suggested that "Lactobacilli are a safe simple "80%" effective treatment for acne, especially in boys and girls under the age of 18". Acne is basically a sebaceous gland dysfunction, perhaps related to hormone imbalance, nutritional inadequacy (often sizc deficiency, for example), emotional stress and hygienic factors, in any combination or acting alone.
Dr Siver found, when treating gastro-intestinal conditions with lactobacilli, that very often there was a coincidental improvement in the patient's acne.

Anxiety and Depression

While there is no direct data relating lactobacilli to the alleviation of anxiety and depressive symptoms, indirect evidence suggests a possible relationship. they point out in treating such conditions the use of inidividual amino acids such as tryptophan (also phenylalanine).
Since lactobacilli release (when they act on protein foods) essential amino acids during fermentation, fermented dairy products are rich in several essential amino acids, including tryptophan. Dr Hangee-Bauer suggest that as well as there being the strong possiblity of deficiency (as mentioned aslo by Shahani and Friend) in cases of anxiey/depression, there could also be toxic causes: " Colonisation of the intestines with lactobacilli reduces the amounts of endotoxins produced by certain bacteria, some of which have been linked with a wide variety of inflammatory and mental disorders." There would seem to be every reason to use this knowledge when faced with problems of anxiety and depression, since there is very clearevidence of many such cases having, in combination or alonse, nutritional deficiency or imbalance, toxicity or allergy as part of the cause, interacting with perhaps psycho-social factors.
Anyone with depression however should always receive expert professional advice, whatever self-help measures are adopted.

Constipation

Probiotics enhance peristaltic activity. this is the muscular motive power which causes the contents of the intestines to move forwards, and which seems to be activated more efficiently when the acidity of the region increases, as it does when lactobacilli are creating lactic, acetic and other acids as part of their normal activities of fermentation.

Tumour inhibition and the treatment of cancer with probiotics

Perhaps the most startling and exciting information we can share with you relates to the many years of research conducted by Dr Ivan bogdanov of Sofia, Bulgaria. He has produced conclusive evidence of the enormous benefits gained by treating existing carcinomas(of various types)with material extracted from specific strains of Lactobacillus bulgaricus(strain LB-51)
In 1956 Dr Bogdanov discovered that this strain synthesized an anti-cancer substance which necrotizes (kills) tumour cells without being toxic to the person being treated. These synthesized anti-cancer products cause no allergic responses as a rule, but actually seem to stimulate the immune system into greater efforts against the tumour. solid tumours appear to respond most dramatically to this form of treatment. The substance was well tolerated by patients who were in advanced stages of cancer, who had received radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Dr Bogdanove commented on the "stimulatory effect of the preparation on the regeneration processes in organism" Proof of the effectiveness of thes bacterial products is now overwhelming. the evidence relating to clinical trials which started in 1967 on human patients. The substance wxtracted form LB-51 synthesized products was called "Anobol" and this actually contains the processed cell bodies of L. bulgaricus (LB-51). The amount of concentration of L. Lulgaricus used in this way can be judged by the fact that an average daily dose of Anabol contains the cell bodies and synthesized anti-tumour products found in between 40-6-kg of Bulgarian yoghurt.
