Casio EX-V8 Macro

Back to Intro Page

The Casio V8 macro setting has been found to be not much use. From testing it seems that the normal focus mode is alway yielding much the same result as the so-called macro mode. Switching to macro does not gain any real close-up benefit that is worthwhile for the effort need to find the macro mode in the menu and change to it.

From tests comparing how close I could get to a subject in both normal and macro mode I found this....

I measured from subject to tripod hole, I guess they may measure to front of camera as most do but there's possibly only 10mm or so difference in my measurement method. I kept moving the camera to and fro on a macro slider with screw adjust until the focus confirmation failed, then backed off to where focus confirmation was reliable.

Full wide normal closest focus quotes as 400mm, found to be 95mm.
Full wide macro closest focus quotes as 100mm, found to be 95mm.

Mid zoom normal closest focus quotes as 800mm, found to be 420mm.
Mid zoom macro closest focus quotes as 550mm, found to be 410mm.

Full zoom normal closest focus quotes as 1,400mm, found to be 850mm.
Full zoom macro closest focus quotes as 1,000mm, found to be 820mm.

So it appears to me that the macro feature is a waste of space as nothing seems to change much as far as closest focus is concerned.

As for the frame width captured it is about 110 to 115mm wide range for mid and full tele, and about 90mm frame width for widest zoom setting. That represents about 1:3 to about 1:2.5 macro referring to what image is captured by 35mm film frame size.

wide

Crocus flowers taken at maximum wide angle 6.3mm

mid

At about mid tele of 22.1mm

 max

At maximum tele of 44.1mm

All images resized to 400 wide and then sharpened a bit. So closest results are at maximum wide angle where the depth of field would also be greatest. To help isolate backgrounds, then maybe best to try macro at maximum telephoto. The V8 is OK for subjects like flowers and small items like jewellery, but for really small things like insects then a better macro capable camera is required.
