Casio EX-V8 Image Size

Back to Intro Page

The Casio EX-V8 has two items to sort out in the menu in regards to image size or resolution and the jpeg compression ratio to determine the size of the resulting file for whatever resolution is chosen.
From the camera Menu and using a 2 gig  SD card I obtained the following numbers.....

First the selection of resolution. The pixel numbers and the typical use of the file are flashed on the LCD when you are selecting the one to use. It's in red because that's the menu colour for those items.. I added the actual pixel count, and comments columns myself for this chart only.

Menu Setting Pixels Used For Pixel Count Comments
8M 3264x2448 A3 Print 7,990,272 About 198 dpi on a full sized print edge to edge, passable for close examination.
3:2 3264x2176 A3 Print 7,102,464 Ditto, just a different height of print., same length if landscape.
6M 2816x2112 A3 Print 5,947,392 About 170 dpi for edge to edge print, this is borderline soft, but OK at proper viewing distance for this size print.
4M 2304x1728 A4 Print 3,981,312 About 197 dpi on full sized edge to edge print, passable at close examination,.
2M 1600x1200 3.5"x5" 1,920,000 About 320 dpi, super quality print. On a 4"x6" print it still would be about 266 dpi and still an excellent print.
VGA 640x480 Email 307,200 Email quality only, never print this unless only after postage stamp sizes.

The above is for the Aussie version of the camera, the USA version may quote different paper sizes in the camera menu.

Next the matter of how many images might fit on a card (2 gig in this case) when the choice between Fine, Normal and Economy is made.
Resolution Fine Normal Economy
8M 428 799 1177
3:2 457 851 1252
6M 565 1040 1513
4M 786 1405 2185
2M 1561 2489 4185
VGA 5960 10352 14050

The above are just guesses made by the camera firmware and the actual number really obtained may be less or more as the jpeg files can vary dramatically in size due to lack of or presence of fine detail in an image. Of course if you also take some movies then the available space will disappear much faster.

The next project is to test all the settings and see if the recommended print sizes are true and what difference the different jpeg compression levels may make.
