Ireland and UK Holiday 2015, 24th June

At York

To Beverley this morning to see the sights then on to visit Sally and Brian, two of the nicest people we have ever met. Sally sometimes inhabits the DPReview forum and that is how we "met". Funnily both have very similar ages to Lyn and myself, Sally and Lyn born the same year and Brian born the year before me.

Beverley has a unique Minster where the statues are all intact, that seems to be very rare as the Reformation and other events managed to do a lot of statue smashing. The locals did a deal and raised the funds by selling off part of the Minster stonework and paid the Reformation antagonists to leave it alone and keep as a local church. Another crowd funding effort like what happened in Tewkesbury.

Anyway, here's the front door with everything still as it was made back in 1220 - although it took another 200 years to finish the church.....

And inside........

From a distance the Minster is quite imposing........

Then a  visit to the local St Mary's Catholic Church, the intricate painted ceilings being of interest......

The organ repair man was at work so we were treated to scales and stop tests, but no music.....

Nearly forgot to give you an interior shot, the blue ceiling has stars from all the constellations.....

As in all these old churches the choir seats have some great carvings under them. most carvings are of a non-religious theme, but some are.....

An exterior shot of St Marys at Beverley, bits and pieces have been added and altered taking from about 1120 to 1530 to more or less build to this shape......

Back in town, here's the old market square......

Later with Sally and Brian we went to Hull, here is the Humber Bridge, for a while the largest of its type in the world, could not find a lens that could fit it all in - it's big......

That's enough for today, next to pack and head for Telford in Shropshire tomorrow.
