Ireland and UK Holiday 2015, 18th JuneTo Gloucester
Drove from Cornwall to Gloucester and arrived at the hotel after lunch. Took the bus into the city and walked around a bit, spent most time in the grand Gloucester Cathedral. Zipping along the M5, can easily
cruise at 70 to 75mph, but still cars pass us at 90 or 100mph, I think
the limit is 75mph.......
![]() Motorway service stops can be quite civilised, clean but prices are distinctly higher than normal....... ![]() Weird but they have gambling machines in them all........ ![]() Staying at a hotel as a change from B&B type of places, was really cheap by being payed for months in advance...... ![]() Someone is slumming it by staying at the Ibis........ ![]() A different view, the bus driver below me is doing the driving and I'm having a rest, on the way into Gloucester centre..... ![]() Gloucester Cathedral, hard to get back far enough to show it all, and I had to include the ever present scaffolding found on every old building..... ![]() Inside, the plain round columns were a surprise and probably date the basis of the church to very early days, building started in 1089 it seems...... ![]() The cloisters are magnificent and the signs say they are 650 years old...... ![]() This calls for a trick shot with the fisheye lens where I can see two ways at 90 degrees at the same time...... ![]() Lots of old dead dudes under those slate slabs on the floor, many worn badly so unreadable but the 1600's and 1700's figure strongly on the ones that can be read. An annex to the cloisters is this wash area with drains, evidently it was used in a Harry Potter movie along with other parts of the Cathedral...... ![]() A refreshing change was the fact the Cathedral was free to enter, all the rest make you pay. Of course it is natural to give a donation so they do OK anyway. Some stained glass detail that I liked..... ![]() The oldest son of William the Conqueror died in 1134 and here he is...... ![]() There's lots more shots of inside the Cathedral but I guess you are getting bored already so we'll move on. Next down to the old docks area.... ![]() The Earl of Pembroke undergoing extensive work in dry dock, this ship has been used in many movies and TV shows. Not so old being built in 1945 or so. By the way for Aussies, the name Earl of Pembroke was the original name of the Endeavour..... ![]() Saw a fireless loco outside the local maritime museum, these had no fire and needed no coal. They re-charged with steam from a permanent boiler and then could chug around for a while in the docks until they needed a re-charge..... ![]() An elegant clock in one of the main streets, sounds out on the bells every quarter hour. On the hour the guy in the centre rings the main bell for the hour count...... ![]() An old elegant carved wooden shop front........ ![]() Finally another old looking shop front, these are usually a faked up look and not very old at all....... ![]() |
