Ireland and UK Holiday 2015, 14th JuneTo Hayle in Cornwall Packed up in Topsham and moved to Connor Downs near Hayle in Cornwall. Quick visit to Plymouth on the way to see the quay from where some of Lyn's ancestors sailed, also the Mayflower finally got on its way to the Americas from Plymouth. Next had a bite of lunch in Redruth then on the way again. Got to our accommodation and then went for a quick drive up the coast from here to Hells Mouth, quite a spectacular coastline. Plymouth, the tidal harbour and at low tide........
![]() Where the Mayflower set out from, the whole story is on a plaque and it definitely was a totally bungled operation, even settling where they should not have in America, lucky that any of them survived. Also learned from somewhere else that the US Thanksgiving day was based on some much much earlier (Roman?) harvest festival holiday and somehow became the survival thanksgiving day (they thanked god instead of thanking the Indians for saving them). Anyway, back to the Mayflower departure site...... ![]() A quick snap as we drive over the Tamar bridge, Brunel's famous 1859 rail bridge is on the left. For USA viewers, Lyn in the passenger seat is taking the shot, we drive on the correct side of the road in UK and in Australia so I'm safely out of the way on the right....... ![]() Something odd in Redruth, gumboot dogs in bronze...... ![]() In Redruth, the old house of local hero William Murdoch, who experimented with a steam locomotive in 1784, and is also credited with inventing gas lighting in 1732 and had the first house in the world to be gas lit........ ![]() The scenery at Hells Mouth near where we are now....... ![]() And looking the other way from the cliffs opposite..... ![]() That's all for today, maybe a busier photo day tomorrow. |
