Ireland and UK Holiday 2015, 2nd JuneTo Slane, near Drogheda
A day of driving from Doolin in the west to Slane in the east above Dublin. As usual weather a bit iffy, scenery nice but as always nowhere to stop to photograph as the roads are so narrow and dangerous. We did use a motorway part of the time but that's just 120km/h driving (the motorway speed limit) and nothing to see anyway. So just a small group of photos again today. Along the coast above Doolin we
came to Black Head, the coast and all the hills around here look like
this with bare grey rock everywhere....
![]() Black Head lighthouse, I guess those sheep there are eating rocks, not much grass to be seen..... ![]() One of the wider narrow roads we travelled on, this one you could get past a bus or tractor with care, some narrower ones had the hedges brushing both side mirrors at the same time...... ![]() Yet another tower (lots of them in Ireland) in Kells (wide angle lens contributing to the lean). The famous Book of Kells came from here of course and the original is now in Dublin, only a copy is here at the Town Hall. For those who don't know the Book is a very old 9th century illuminated book of the Christian gospels...... now back to that tower.... ![]() Right near where we are staying for the next two nights is Slane Castle. Last weekend they had a Foo Fighters rock concert so the whole Slane town was barricaded against the invaders as about 90,000 turned up. Here is the mess in front of the castle still being disassembled, evidently it was chaos here as the farm hostel where we are had 3,000 people in their camping field. The mesh barriers that you partly see in the bottom right corner of the shot were all through the town to stop people going where they shouldn't...... ![]() |
