Teaching Notes The story of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes brings to light the tragedy of Hiroshima. Every year children throughout the world read the story and consequently are inspired to fold paper cranes. Children are always deeply moved by the story and learn how devastating nuclear weaponry can be, even for many years after detonation. Such tragedy touches families, especially children, who are always the innocent victims of war. But the story is one of hope....hope for peace that is manifested by the folding of cranes, thousands and thousands of them by children in many countries throughout the world.....hope for a world in which conflicts are solved non-violently and in which people can live without fear..... The children of Hiroshima every August 6th declare: This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace in the world.
