With more than 2 billion websites to choose from, the Internet is only a useful tool if you are able to find the information, resource or entertainment you are searching for without spending hours of frustration clicking on links that are of no use to you.  It is, therefore, imperative that students learn to use Search Engines competently and confidently.

Click on the "Search Lessons" button at the top of the page for a complete online course of lessons in how to use search engines.  Searching Strategies Home Page Older students will this site useful to learn the strategies required for researching  on the Internet.  Search Engine Watch Kids A list of Filtered Search Engines which allow you to search the web rather than just through a hand-picked selection of kid-safe sites. Results are filtered to remove objectionable material. Kids.Net.au This is an Australian search engine just for kids which is operated by volunteers searching sites that are fun, educational and child safe.  The database of sites is mainly collected from user suggestions.

Kids@nationalgeographic.com This is the 'kids’ section of the National Geographic website and is a mine of information both in text and graphics.  Go to the Great Barrier Reef  and take a deep sea dive without getting your feet wet or take a trek through Nepal without leaving home.  HyperHistory HyperHistory presents 3000 years of world history with a colour coded combination of graphics, lifelines, timelines, and maps.  Over 2000 files interconnected throughout the site plus several hundred links to the Web.  An enormous amount of information displayed in a unique way.  Access Asia This is the website of  The Asia Education Foundation, a national organisation formed to promote the study of Asia. The information contained in this site is a wonderful resource for classes of any age studying Asian culture.

ArtLex: This is a Visual Arts dictionary in which you will find definitions of more than 3,300 terms, along with thousands of images, pronunciation notes, great quotations, and links to other resources on the Web. Energy in the Air
This site was made as an entry in the annual ThinkQuest competition and includes information about how sound is made, what it looks like when it is recorded, information on the instruments that play in the orchestra and sound clips of the orchestra playing music. There is also an activities section showing how instruments are made.  You will need  Real Player to access the sound files.
Music Education at Datadragon
This is a wonderful resource.  You are able to listen to and read information about instruments, learn notation, find information on various musical genres and read "Today in Musical History".  There are also many links to other musical sites on the Internet.
Didgeridoo
This site contains "easy to follow" instructions on circular breathing - although I can't imagine how anything so unnatural can ever be described as easy.

The Human Race Developed by the Children's Health Development Foundation in Adelaide, for students aged 10 - 15.  It's an interactive program that encourages children to make physical activity a part of their daily lives.  Once registered, students choose a physical activity in which to participate.  They time their performances, record their results and have their improvement points calculated.  These points can be compared with classes in other countries and students around the world can communicate with each other.

Languages on the Web Here is a  site that provides you with 30,000 of the best language related links.  As well as learning languages as diverse as Bhojpuri and Azerbaijani you can read bilingual short stories and make requests for assistance in writing in various languages.  An invaluable aid to any language teacher.  International Collection of Tongue Twisters This is the fun section of a german translation site.  There are 2080 tongue twisters in 90 languages but more can be accessed through their links.    Personally I found pronouncing the names of the some of the languages hard enough.

Quia Languages Quia, one of my favourite sites on the Internet, has provided games and activities in 28 different languages as well as offering the facility for you to make your own in order to practise the particular vocabulary your students are learning at any given time.  Google's Links to Languages Sites

THEMATIC ONLINE LEARNING 

BRAIN POP Features Science, Biology and Technology subjects for 5-8 grades. Each subject contains a 3-4 minute Animated Movie, an Interactive Quiz, an Experiment, a Comic Strip, a 'How-To' application, a Timeline and a print-able Activity Page.  2 movies/day may be watched free of charge but schools that need to more can buy a School Pass for $135 US per school per year.  ZOOM SCHOOL Zoom School is an virtual on-line classroom with lessons in geography, biology, language. arts, and early childhood activities. Children love to explore and learn through the various themed units.

Freeality Internet Search Previously known as the Internet Oracle, Freeality provides a terrific set of links to online encyclopaedias.  Apart from the conventional encyclopaedias there are listings for more selective sites such as the Encyclopaedia Mythica and the Enclyclopaedia of Philosophy.  A one-stop shop for knowledge!

Britannica.com Britannica.com includes the complete, updated Encyclopædia Britannica, the oldest and largest general reference in the English language. The search facility includes more than 125,000 sites, and you can also search the text of more than 100 million Web pages to find more information.

Merriam Webster Online Dictionary This is a complete online language centre which also offers the facility of downloading a program to add a dictionary button to your Internet Browser or Web Site.   I find this invaluable.  Simply highlight a word on a web page and click the dictionary button on your tool bar to have a dictionary definition or thesaurus suggestion within seconds.  Enclyclopedia.com. ...because knowledge is cool!  Fabulous free encyclopedia provided by elibrary.  A comprehensive digital archive of information for young and old alike.

YourDictionary.com YourDictionary.com accesses 1800 dictionaries in 230 languages. It also provides a games room. language identifiers, grammar information, specialist dictionaries and language tools.  This is an excellent site offering a complete language resource.  Facts and Reference

KIDS STUFF – Places to have fun while you learn! 

Iknowthat Children can design and create stickers and certificates or complete projects, which can be sent through email invitations containing clickable links.  It's a great way for them to communicate and interact on the Internet and to learn skills which will be of benefit to them in other applications.  Some good Reading and Maths activities included in the site and  certificates are awarded on completion of a task.  Primary Games Created by Susan Shuey Beasley, a School-Based Technology Specialist who originally designed the games for her own students. Personally I'm addicted to playing "Dot's Checkers"  which meant writing this website took twice as long as it should have done! FunBrain A site full of brain teasers and games designed to enhance learning and make it fun as well as many resources for both teachers and parents. A collection of web-based curriculum products and professional development programs for K-12 educators.  You do need to become a member in order to use the resources of the site - but it's free and offers the facility of connecting with other teachers worldwide to swap ideas, resources and bookmarks.  Australian.Teachers.Net This is a division of the American Teachers.Net site and provides message boards, mailing rings and chatboards to enable Australian teachers to make contact and maintain links with other teachers both nationally and internationally.  Education World® Education World has developed a search engine for educational Web sites only so that teachers can locate ideas or research materials without searching the entire Internet.  The site provides original content - lesson plans, articles and information on how to make use of technology.  teachers@work This New Zealand has selection of more than 3000 links which have all been reviewed and classified according to their layout, language level, content and educational approach.  MyGradeBook.Com MyGradeBook.Com is a no longer a free website (it costs $25US a year for 5 -199 teachers) but it can be useful to teachers, students and parents.
