John Middleton's Schoolbook, Staindrop, 1853-4
The following pen and pencil drawings are from John's schoolbook dated Staindrop, 1853 (see Frame 1).
I would appreciate any feedback on the possible locations of Frames 2, 3, 4, 6 & 8 to please email me at johnmidd@ihug.com.au
The poor quality of these images reflects their age, and the fact that in most cases the drawings are in pencil. The combination of yellowing paper and light pencil results in relatively poor contrast.
Image 4 is Titled " Ovington Church, Yorkshire" . I have been unable to locate this church, but it may now be a ruin in the valley below Hutton Magna, near Staindrop. It has been suggested to me that it is the church in Hutton Magna, but inquiries indicate that that church was not built until the late 1800's.
Image 5 is the old Hartepoole lighthouse, demolished during World War I, so that the Battery at Hartepoole could defend the town.
