John Middleton's Family History

 Davy Line
    Ludvgan and Penzance, Cornwall

The Davy line joins the Middleton family with the Marriage of my Paternal great-grandfather Peter Colliver to Constance Warner Davy in Madron in 1874 .

    EARLY DAVY HISTORY
Much of this early history was passed on to me by Geri Podskalney of British Columbia, Canada and Carin Thomas.

My DAVY line can be traced back to  Edmund DAVY (born ca.1625) and Joan BLAKE through their son Robert (1663-1738). I am not aware if there were any other children to the marriage. This DAVY line lived in Ludgvan, Cornwall.

Robert Davy and Joan Marrack (M 19 October 1708, his second wife)  appear to have had a large family in Ludgvan (although I haven't yet confirmed that all children ascribed to Robert at that time were to the same Robert). Their son, Edmund (ch. 5 May 1721) married Mrs. Grace Adams 23 April 1744 at  Madron. There are six sons (Richard, Robert, William, Edmund, Henry, John) and one daughter (Grace)recorded in the Penzance register to Edmund Davy within 15 years of the marriage, but I have not confirmed that these are all children of Edmund and Grace.

Robert Davy, their third son, ch. 1749 married  Grace Millett (1750-1826) at Madron, 16 Sept 1776. Robert and Grace had six children including Humphry (1778-1829) who later found fame as a physician, scientist and the inventor of the Davy miner’s safety lamp, for which he was knighted.   Humphry Davy married Jane Apreece in London in 1812 . They had no children. Their other son, John  (1790-1868) became a doctor. He married Margaret Fletcher b. 1798-1869  and they had three children; Archibald, Grace and Mary. Robert and Grace also had 4 daughters, Elizabeth, Mary, Grace and Catherine.

William Davy (b. 1748) married  Mary Anne Dunkin (b. 1751), also at Madron on  27 Dec 1774. William and Mary Ann had 10 children:

1. William Adams b. 1776-1839
2. Mary Ann b. 1777
3. Robert b. 1778-1779
4. R. Henry b. 1781
5. Richard b. 1782
6. Grace b. 174
7. Edmund b. 1785 - 1887
8. Eliz. Sylvia b. 1789
9. Henry Ustick b. 1790
10. Jonathan b. 1790 - 1791

WILLIAM ADAMS DAVY (1776-1839)

William Adams Davy married Margaret Mitchell 17 Jun 1797 at  Madron, Cornwall . William and Margaret had four children, Mary DAVY, William Michell DAVY and John Pender DAVY(1803-1855), apparently twins, ch. Penzance 25 Apr 1803  and Constance Warner DAVY ch.  26 Apr 1805.

Margaret died in 1805 (perhaps during the birth of Constance) and William re-married to Ann Vinicombe 20 August 1810. They had six children: Elizabeth 1811-1876, Richard Vinicome Davy 1812-1868, Edmund ch.1814, Humphry 1816-1858, Henry 1817-1891 and Christopher Ellis 1818-1832.

CONSTANCE WARNER DAVY ( 1805-1885)
Constance Warner Colliver was my great-great grandmother.

Constance’s father William Davy was a wine merchant and Mayor of Penzance in 1836. At that time Michael Colliver, her future husband’s father was also a town councilor. I have not established any background information on Margaret Mitchell.

Constance married Michael Colliver at Madron, Cornwall (then the Parish church for Penzance) on 22 August, 1831. They had five children. Further details are included with Michael COLLIVER on my Colliver page.

After her husband Michael died in 1866, Constance continued to live in Penzance for some time. She is recorded in the Penzance registration District in the 1871 census (District 17, Schedule 175 ) living with her daughter Constance Warner Colliver and a servant Ellen Richards.

Constance died 15 May 1885 at 15 Arthur Street, Gloucester, aged 89 years. Cause of death is recorded as “old age, jaundice”. She was buried 23 May 1885 in Penzance.

For Further details see Michael Colliver.
