Safety
Requirements
- Use only black powder or replica
black powder in muzzleloaders.
Pyrodex is the brand name of the most commonly
known replica black powder.
- Firearms must be carried with muzzles
upright.
Treat every gun as loaded. Never point it at
anything you don't intend to shoot. Keep the muzzle
pointed in a safe direction at all times, including while
loading. Never lean over the muzzle. Make priming the pan
or capping the nipple the last step of loading.
- Breech loading firearm actions must
be open when not at firing line.
- All firearms must be pointing within
the extremities of the Stop Butt before being made ready
to shoot.
Be sure of your target before firing. Be aware of
the location of other people around you. Know what is
behind your target. Never fire into water or at flat,
hard surfaces. Round balls are prone to glance or
ricochet.
- Capping and cartridge loading, only
on firing line.
Be sure your gun is in firing condition before you
pull the trigger. Make sure the ball is firmly seated,
the gun is not overcharged, there is no obstruction in
the barrel, etc.
- Load powder from powder measure only,
not directly from a powder flask or powder horn.
- Treat a misfire or failure to fire
with extreme care.
Keep the gun pointed in a safe direction down
range, and wait at least one full minute before
repriming.
- All firearms must be cleared by the
range captain or person nominated by the range captain
before leaving the firing line at all times.
Make sure your gun is unloaded before you leave
the firing line, cleaning the firearm, or storing
it.
- No smoking in loading or shooting
areas.
Never smoke while loading, shooting, or handling
blackpowder propellants.
- Protective glasses should be worn at
all times but must be worn for all muzzle loading
events.
- Ear protection should be worn.
- Covered shoes must be worn in loading
and shooting areas.
- Alcohol must not be consumed by any
shooter prior to or during the course of shooting.
- Children must be under parental
supervision.
- No pets on range!
- Store the gun, powder, and caps
seperately in secure locations as per local firearm
laws.
- Use Common Sense at all times.
