Rendezvous Camping

Guidelines to Semi-Primitive Camping.

The aim of a Primitive camping area is to allow those involved to enjoy the camping and lifestyle of the pre 1840 era for Rendezvous (fur trade) style campers and pre 1865 for those wishing to camp in a total Military environment.

A separate area within the Primitive camping area will be set aside as a Military (pre 1865) encampment.

  • Shelters.
All shelters shall be of a pre 1840 nature (pre 1865 for Military) and must be white, off-white, cream or grey canvas. Synthetic material, in fabric or rope will not be accepted. Acceptable types of shelters are -
    • Tee-pee
    • 'A' frame
    • Voyager
    • Diamond shelter
    • Lean-to

Proof of authenticity must be provided for any shelter outside these recommendations.

  • Clothing.
Period clothing is to be worn at all times by all persons, for the duration of the rendezvous. This includes footwear. Consideration must be given to the time period being portrayed and the styles and materials which would have been available (eg. no zippers or velcro!) Tracksuits or similar modern clothing must not be worn outside of the shelter.
  • Furniture & Cookware.
All outside trappings shall be in the theme of the period, with no modern items visible - plan to have suitable containers or calico bags available for milk/juice, cereal/bread etc. The sight of these items in their modern containers can ruin the look of your table completely. Cookware is to be appropriate for the period - no stainless steel or aluminium. All internal items should be within the theme of the period. Any modern necessity must not be visible from the entrance of the shelter.

It will be expected that visiting friends or family intending to stay at your shelter for any length of time should be provided with suitable primitive dress. The area surrounding your shelter shall be kept clear of any "modern" rubbish left by visitors, ie cigarette butts, drink cans, bottles, papers, etc.
  • Vehicles.
A time limit of one hour maximum will be allowed for unloading vehicles at your selected site, after which time the vehicle must be removed to a designated parking area.

Guidelines to Semi-Primitive Camping.

An area adjacent to the primitive camping area , has been set aside for those who cannot fully satisfy the guidelines for primitive camping. This will be known as the semi-primitive area.

Shelters in this area will be of a pre 1840 nature (pre 1865 for Military) and must be white, off-white, cream or grey canvas. Synthetic material, in fabric or rope should be avoided. Acceptable types of shelter are -

  • Tee-pee
  • 'A' frame
  • Voyager
  • Diamond shelter
  • Lean-to

Non-primitive items of furniture and kitchenware are acceptable in this area but should be covered, or kept as much as possible out of sight of the primitive area. Vehicles will not be allowed in this semi-primitive area.

It will be expected that those in this area will follow the theme of pre 1840 (1865) as much as possible in dress and accoutrements, and have consideration for their primitive neighbours.
