Henry MORLAND born-4 Oct 1803 England - died-23 Dec 1868 England Married Georgiana Frances Anne ROOKE born-17 Oct 1823 England - died-26 Sep 1904 England
They had 14 children - the first seven born in India as Henry was a Lieutenant Colonel in the 27th Madras Native Infantry. The last 7 children, including my Great Great Grandfather, Arthur Vivian Morland(child 9) were all born in England.
When their Mother, Georgiana died, her Death Certificate states that the Informant of her Death, was her Daughter, Florence.
Henry's Parents were James MORLAND and Eleanor ALISTON.They were married on 6th January 1794 ENGLAND - Finsbury Saint Luke Old St London. Apparantley Henry's Father, a 'failed' coal merchant, deserted his Mother and the family, and Eleanor's brother, John Aliston was the one who supported them. John was the one who sponsored Henry into the Madras Infantry. Henry enlisted on 10th June, 1821 was also courtmartialled on 16th September 1835 and retired on 6th January, 1853.

Henry's siblings, as far as I know are: Eleanor -b.c.1799, James Alliston -b.29 Aug 1801, Caroline -b.12 Aug 1805,Charles Edward -b.18 July 1807 and Frances -b.29 April 1811.
Henry was living at Priory Terrace, St. Paul, Bedford where he died in 1868 at the age of 65 years.
Georgiana's siblings were: Charlotte Hannah - b.16 Aug 1806, Charles b.26 Aug 1809, James Nicholas b.16 March 1811, Harriett Emily b.8 Dec 1812 and Anna Maria b.19 Oct 1816
Henry and Georgiana were married at Calcutta Cathedral on 30th June 1840. Henry was 37 years old and Georgiana was 17 years old.
Georgiana is noted in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 UK Census'. In 1881 living at 8 Alexandra Rd, Bedford St Paul, Bedford, England She was stated as the Head of the family, a widow and her means was a Military Pension. Living with her at this time were daughters, Alice, Mary A and Bella with her husband John P Holdich, Granddaughter Ellen, Son Frank and a domestic servant named Elizabeth S. Holdich aged 17 years. In 1891 she was living at Nellore County: Hampshire Civil Parish; Christchurch ED: 6 Eccl. Parish: Pokesdown St James and with her at this time were - Bella-daughter, widow, Alice-daughter, Spinster, Mary Anna-daughter, spinster, Florence-daughter age 29 born NottingHill,Spinster and Mary Seamwell-spinster, a 22 year old domestic servant born in Wiltshire. In 1901 UK Census, Georgiana was living at London,Marylebone,Southampton,Ringwood, living on her own means. With her were living Florence Morland - 36 - London, Notting Hill, Southampton, Ringwood - No Occupation - Frank Morland - 35 - London, Hammersmith, Southampton, Ringwood - Dramatist Author and Theatrical Manager, and Mary Morland - 51 - Madras Bris Subject, Southampton, Ringwood - No Occupation.
Georgiana was living in Christchurh Street, Ringwood where she died in 1904.

First child, Georgiana Isabelle was born in Jaulnah, India on 11 Jul 1841, christened on 21 September 1841 and died and was buried on 5th April 1842 being only 7 months old.
Of Henry's & Georgiana's children only 2 that I know of never married. They were Alice (child 4) and Mary Anne (child 6). Both these girls appear on the U.K. Census' of 1881, 1891 and 1901 as living with their mother and other family members (their father being deceased) and both are stated as "Spinsters"

Second child, Ellen Caroline was born & christened in India in 1842. Ellen married Henry George Forbes COTGRAVE, born 1838 in Poonah, East Indies who was the son of Edwin Charles COTGRAVE and Anna Maria ROOKE (Georgiana's sister). Therefore, Ellen and Henry were first cousins. They were married on 2nd June 1863, Ellen being 21 yrs and Henry 25 yrs. They had 2 children that I know of. Both born in Queensland, Australia. Their first child, a daughter, was Ellen Minnie, born 5 may 1864 and the second, a son, was born 26 Jan 1866. This son was unnamed as he died the same month, possibly the same day that he was born. Henry also died in Queensland on 3 March 1866. Their daughter, Ellen is stated on the 1881 UK Census as living with her Grandmother, Georgiana Morland. It also states that she is 16 years old and is a scholar.

Ellen remarried George Griffith BAYLY on 12 December 1875 at Holy Trinity, Bedford, England.George was born approximately 1854 in England. His date and place of death are unknown to me as are his parents. It is not known if there were any children to this marriage.

Third child, Bella was born 26 Sept 1845 in India and died on 9 Dec 1934 at 34 Woodside, Wimbledon, Surrey. She was 88 years old. Bella married John Peach HOLDICH on 12 Dec 1872 at Holy Trinity in Bedord England. Bella was 27 years old and John was 29 years old. John was born 13 Feb 1843 and died 27 Jul 1877 at the home of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Morland - Overdale, Chaucer Road, Bedford England. He was 44 years old. John was the son of Thomas Peachy HOLDICH and Susan H. HOLDICH. He was also the Twin Brother of SIR THOMAS HUNGERFORD HOLDICH who was a soldier and boundary maker in India and South America. Bella and John are mentioned on the 1881 UK Census as living with her mother, Georgiana. There are no known children of this marriage.

Fourth child, Alice was born 31 January 1847 India and died 7 September 1936 at the age of 89 years, place unknown. Alice is noted on 1881 and 1891 UK Census living with her mother. She is noted in the 1901 UK Census as - Alice Morland - 53 - India - Bedford - St Pauls Bedford - [no occupation mentioned]. I have no details of who she was living with or at which address she lived.

Fifth child, Henry Howard born 28 March 1848 India. No detials of his death. Henry married Eliza Street P. BACON in June 1874 at Wandsworth, England. Eliza was born in Middlesex, England in 1853. No details of her parents. Henry was 26 years old and Eliza was 21 years old. They had 4 children that I know of. John Howard born 1875, Henry Arthur born 1877 and twins Florence Beatrice and Sidney Herbert born 1881. These children were living with both parents in 1881 UK Census, at 103 Crystal Palace Road, Camberwell, Surrey, England.

Sixth child, Mary Anne was born 23 May 1849 in India and died 17 July 1933 aged 84 years old. Place of death unknown. Mary Anne is mentioned as others on 1881, 1891 and 1901 UK Census' as living with her mother. Each time she is stated as a Spinster or un married.

Seventh child, Charlotte Elizabeth was born 6 March 1851 India. No death details. She married William John PORTER on 14 July 1875 at Bedford, London. Charlotte was 24 years old and John was 27 years old. There is doubt about John's parents, but I have them as John Peter Travers PORTER and Sarah Anne surname unknown. John was christened on 27 Feb 1848 in Calcutta, West Bengal India and died around 1886. There is also some doubt about his death. Charlotte and John had 1 known child. On the 1901 UK Census it is noted that Charlotte Porter - 49 - b Madras India - living in Bristol on Own Means, daughter - Agnes age 24 - born unknown.

Eighth child, Walter Napier was born 26 October 1852 in England. No death details available. Walter married Amelia CLARK in December 1878 at Lambeth, England. Walter was 26 years old and Amelia was approx. 27 years old. Amelia was born c.1851 Tunbridge Wells, Surrey, Kent, London. Details of her parents are unknown. They had one known child, a daughter, Minnie-born c. 1880 in Camberwell, Surrey. Details of 1881 UK Census - Walter M Morland - Head -marr - Male - 29 - Paddington, Middlesex, England - Clerk (Insurance Office), Emily Morland - Wife - married - female - 30 - b.Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England, Minnie Morland - daur - female - 2 - b. Camberwell, Surrey, England and Clara WILSON - niece - female - 9 - b. Brixton, Surrey, England - Scholar. They were living at 230 Milkwood Road, Lambeth, Surrey (StPauls's Herne Hill - Norwood Divn of Lambeth - Lambeth - Herne Hill. Details of 1901 UK Census - Walter Morland - 48 - Paddington, Surrey, Kent, Penge London - Stock Brokers Clerk and Emily Morland - 50- Tunbridge, Wells, Surrey, Kent, Penge, London.

Ninth child, Arthur Vivian- my Great,Great Grandfather was born 1 May 1954 in Middlesex, Paddington, London, England and died 28 January 1910 at 40 Cowie St, Albert Park, Melbourne, Victoria aged 56 years. No details available of when he arrived in Australia. According to his death certificate he would have been about 31 years old when he arrived. He was married on 22 January 1891 at The Manse in Sydney to Sarah RUSSELL. Arthur was 37 years old and Sarah was 29 years old. Sarah was born 10 October 1862 in County Down, Ireland and died 4 August 1915 at the [sic] Feathertone Sanitarium, 11 Albert St, East Richmond in Melbourne, Victoria. She was 53 years old. Her parents were William RUSSELL and Jane HILL.Also, no details of when or where Sarah arrived in Australia. Being that Arthur and Sarah both died in Victoria, I have no details of when or why they moved there after being married in Sydney. Sarah's Death Certificate states that she lived 20 years in Victoria. Arthur's Death Certificate states that he lived 25 years in Victoria. They had 5 children, all born in Melbourne, Victoria. Their first child, a daughter, Georgina Ina May, who was known as "Ina" was born in 1892 and died at the age of 15 years on 4 August 1915 at her parent's house at 88 Victoria Ave, Albert Park, Melbourne VICTORIA. She died from Tuberculosis. The second child, a son, William Clarence or sometimes known as William Charles was born in 1895 and died 13 August 1931 at The Mental Hospital, Callan Park, Leichhardt, Sydney at the age of 36 years. William was a Gunner in the First World War and saw active duty from 12 May 1917 and returned to Australia on 9 July 1919. He died from acute bronchial pneumonia and chronic melancholia. He never married.

Tenth child, Charles- was born 26 September 1855 and died 27 November 1855 at 2 months of age. No more details are known.

Eleventh child, Charles William - was born 26 March 1857 Wimbledon, Surrey, England, christened 1 August 1857 Wimbledon, Surrey, England and died 1 August 1857 at 5 months of age. [same day as christened]. No more details are known.

Twelfth child, Florence - was born June 1860 Kensington, England. No details of her death are available to me. Florence appears on the 1881 UK Census as a visitor at 15 Westgate Terr: Census Place: Kensington, London, Middlesex, England. She is stated as - U - 20 - London, London, Middlesex, England: Rel-Visitor Occ: No Occupation. On the 1891 and 1901 UK Census' she appears again as living with her mother, Georgiana- 1881 Address: Nellore-County: Hampshire Civil Parish: Christchurct ED: 6 Eccl. Parish: Pokesdown St James - Town: Boscombe Daur - S - 29 - Notting Hill. 1901 UK Census as living with Mother, Georgiana - 77 - Florence Morland - 36 - London, Notting Hill [place of birth], Southampton, Ringwood - No occupation.
Florence was also the informant of her mother's death in 1904 whilst living at Christchurch St, Ringwood.

Thirteenth child, Georgiana - was born 26 June 1863 at Notting Hill, England and christened on 12 June 1864 Notting Hill. No details of her death known to me. In a birthday book owned by her father, Arthur Vivian there is a marriage notice pertaining to Georgiana. It reads:- "CHESTER-MORLAND, - Sept, 16 at St. James Pokesdown, near Boscombe, by the Rev. Thomas Preston, vicar of Swaffham [?] Cambridge, assisted by the Rev. J.D.Dinlap [?], Edward Gra. Chester, of The Indian Forest Department to Georgiana, 2nd [?] youngest daughter of the Late Lieut. Colonel Morland, 27th Madras Native Infantry. No Cards." This marriage took place in 1888. Georgiana was 25 years old and her husband, Edward Gra. Chester was 35 years old. Edward, from records I have found but not verified was christened 17 March 1853 Barkway, Hertford, England and was the son of Granudo CHESTER and Maria Camilla surname unknown. According to 1881 UK Census, Edward lived at 70 Kennington Green Rd, London, Middlesex at this time. I don't know if there were any children to this marriage.
