Kalypso User Wipes
Creating your very own wipes.

Sometimes the wipes supplied with the Kalypso aren't enough. Sometimes the 113,280 modifiers you can apply to a wipe aren't enough. Somtimes the 14 analogue modifiers with ranges of at least 100 units each aren't enough. Sometimes the 3 types of Wipe Mix that can combine any two of the above aren't enough.

You want a lot, don't you?

But it's going to cost you. You need to create the wipe as a graphic first, with black, white and shades of grey. And then follow my instructions to the letter.
For NTSC, the dimensions of your graphic need to be 646x486. For Pal, the dimensions are 768x576. The images on this page are currently 646x486, suitable for NTSC countries. I'll get around to making both versions one day.
  • First, wire fifty bucks into my bank account.
  • Then, copy the wipe image into the Still Store. You can use a file conversion tool and the Still Store Loader utility. Or, you can use one of the samples you see here.
  • Put the Still containing your wipe on the Utility 2 bus of the Pgm/Pst row. Go to the Wipe menu, and choose the PP's Primary Wipe 1 (PW1), and touch the "Pgm-Pst PW1" white datapad. The "Point of Use" submenu will appear. Under "Generator", select "U2". This means that the PP row's Wipe 1 will use a pattern which comes from the Utility 2 row.
  • Turn on the Softness button, and adjust it to (say) 90%. Maybe even 100%. It's a user adjustment - adjust it to suit yourself.
  • On the main panel, select Wipe 1 as your Transition Type. Now as you move the fader, the Utility 2 Row is providing the transition pattern between the background-A and background-B rows. At the fader half-way point, anything in your graphic less than 50% grey will show the B-row, while anything more than 50% grey will show te A-row.
  • Experiment with some of the options: Softness; Direction; Border. Try the other modifiers and see what happens.
Using these patterns
Pattern 1 is a simple matrix-like wipe that snakes down the screen in three segments.
Pattern 2 does a soft-edge wipe that gives a hint of some text through the fader travel.
Pattern 3 does the same, but different. (Another chance to get my name on your Kalypso.)
Pattern 4 is a geometric shatter-pattern which I created absent-mindedly while watching a DVD at Christmas. It looks a little violent, like the movie.
Patterns 5,6,7 & 8 are attempts to recreate the "dust" wipe from the Ampex Century. Each one gets progressively finer. It was Matthew Saplin who suggested detailing how you would go about creating the Dust wipe. This page is in response to him. Good one, Matt! Keep the suggestions coming.
Pattern 9 adds the merest hint of some text to the dust wipe, to give you some ideas for subliminal advertising.

When you click on the link, the image will open up in the browser. Right-click (or do funny Mac-stuff to it) to allow the option of saving the file to disk. Then user the browser "Back" button to return to this page.
