Trigger a Countup Clock
Use a GPI to trigger a counter display to start counting up. Create a Macro that sets that GPI out. Post-Attach the Macro to every button on the Pgm/Pst A-Bkgd, and the [cut] and [auto tran] buttons as well. Then you'll always know how far into an item you are, or how long you've been on the same boring shot.

A Big Hand for Grass Valley
To pack so much into the Kalypso, a few compromises had to be made. One was the idea of "Modifiers" - you hold down one button to change the action of another button. Examples of this are the [Shift] and [Alt Buses] modifiers. The problem is, sometimes you don't have two hands free. And sometimes, you even need three hands; consider the case where you need to simultaneously press [Shift], a Keyer Source, and the [Clr WkBfr] button. Unbelievable!
So, create a Macro that (in the Menu) changes all eight busses of an M/E to have a "Shifted" Shift Preference. The Macro then pauses for three seconds, and then sets them all back to "Unshifted". Attach this Macro to a button on the M/E (those "User Wipe" buttons have a lot to do, don't they?). Now, initiating this Macro is like a temporary Shift Lock (for three seconds), allowing one-handed selection. "Shift" may not be a problem on some busses (because of the the new DPOP action in version 10.2), but this concept can be extended to the A-Bkgd and Utility-1 rows.
Thanks to Danny Skarka for this idea.

Some of the ideas in the "User Prefs" or "Suite Prefs" pages could be classified as Tricks - things to help you work around something. Check out those pages, too. And the Effects page is worth a look.
