Finding the position of a Keyer Mask

Sometimes when you turn on the "Box" mode of "Inhibit Mask", your key disappears because the box doesn't intersect with any keyable areas - especially when the key is a top-of-frame or lower-third super (only filling a small area of the screen). You end up turning knobs randomly until you see your key reappear. Until "Mask Preview" becomes available, you can find the position of the "Box" by this trick with "Force Mask".

Background info: Each keyer can be masked by any of six sources, one of which is the "Box". The rectangle created is the same whether you are trying to "Inhibit" the key or to "Force" the key. In "Force" mode, you will always see the key fill inside the rectangle, as though the Mask shape is being added to the Key Signal. If you can find the "Box" edges in "Force", you can position it properly for use as an "Inhibit" mask.
  • Turn on "Force Mask" with the "Box" source, which will make the position of the Box visible even where there is no key signal.
  • Make the edges hard. If the Mask "Softness" control has been fully applied, even a full frame key might become invisible. The Soft knob (the Top mask knob) has about 5 complete turns between 0% - 100% softness. If in doubt, spin this knob anti-clockwise for at least 5 turns to ensure the Box edge is hard (with the "Sep Edges" button off).
  • Increase the size of the box until you can see it. With the "Sep Edges" button off, turn the "Bottom/Size" knob clockwise ... there is a HUGE range on the Mask, so keep turning it until you see something.
  • Once you can see any part of the rectangle, you can re-engage the "Sep Edges" button to move the box to where you want it. If an edge is off the screen: Turn "Top" and "Bottom" knobs clockwise to move the edge higher up the screen; Turn "Left" and "Right" knobs clockwise to move the edge to the right of the screen.
  • Turn off the "Force Mask" by de-selecting "Box". Turn on the "Inhibit Mask" by selecting "Box". The key is now being masked exactly as you require it.
