Kalypso Shortcomings
The Menu Application
The recent model Kalypso Enhanced Menu Panels that have the PC inside the monitor are so much quicker than the original ones, aren't they? (Where do they get off, calling my model the "Classic"? It hasn't even got all the features described in the sales brochure yet.) Having the CD in-built is quite a space-saving measure, too. And having USB instead of SCSI means you can use a Flash drive instead of a Zip, which is fast becoming a dinosaur. BUT for us poor "Classic" users, there are still long delays as the screen re-draws. And changing menus before the re-draw finishes can leave us with half-menus overlaying other menus. Give me a button that will re-draw the screen from scratch. (I have to admit, when trying to cause a menu overlap as I write this page, I couldn't make it happen; perhaps that's been fixed? Ahh, the perils of writing a page on software bugs.) Since a decision was made by Grass Valley to use a graphical interface, they should pull out all stops to make it seem as fast as a "plain text" interface would have been.
Would using Linux as the Menu Panel OS make it quicker? Perhaps the problem is using too high a level of programming language; too much "stuff" happening behind the scenes.
