Transition Animations
A common requirement these days is to hide the transition between two sources with a brief animation. Other pages introduced the concept; this page shows how you can program the effect.

Creating the Timeline for a Replay Transition
Your Timeline will have four keyframes:
  • Keyframe 1: A buffer to prevent the animation from playing when you first select the E-Mem;
  • Keyframe 2: Triggers the animation 1 frame later;
  • Keyframe 3: The delay between the start of the animation and the start of the background transition;
  • Keyframe 4: The duration of the background transition.
Since this is a Timeline, running it will change the entire M/E, so you might want to pre-select M/E modes, clean feeds, transition times, keyers etc now, before you begin. Program the entire effect with hard-wired sources, and when it works perfectly, add "Source Holds" to both background rows.
  • Select the same Source on A- and B-backgrounds. This is a work-around to a bug in earlier software versions which causes a transition to occur if "Run" is pressed when the Timeline is sitting on the last keyframe. Have only "Bkgd" selected as the transition (mix or wipe). Select E-Mem levels (eg "PP", "SSA") and "Auto Recall".
  • If this is a chromakey transition, set the key adjustments. Create the first keyframe by [Learn] #number.
  • In the Still Store Playback menu, tap the "Start at KF" button. Cut the key online using the keyer hot key. Create the second Keyframe by pressing [Insert After].
  • Turn off the "Start at KF" trigger in the Still Store. Select a different source on the B-Background. Create the third Keyframe by pressing [Insert After].
  • Perform the background transition by moving the fader. Use the keyer hot-key to turn the keyer OFF. If you're using a wipe, you could re-select [Mix] at this point. Create the final Keyframe by pressing [Insert After].
  • Now go back to each keyframe and modify the transition times to suit your animation. Keyframe 1 will have a KF-Dur of 1 frame. Keyframe 2 will have a KF-Dur of (the delay before the background starts to change). Keyframe 3 will be the duration of the background transition (typically either only a few frames during the full-frame part of the animation, or almost the entire animation's duration). The last Keyframe of a Timeline has an irrelevant KF-duration (as there's nowhere to go to from there).
Practice a few times to get the timing right, and then go into the "E-Mem | Source Holds" menu and put holds on both backgrounds of the M/E, then press [Mod][Mod] (ie, [Mod All]. That means the transition will happen from whatever is on the A-Row to whatever you select on the B-Row.

(Using Source Holds is superior to using Bus Holds whenever you have some E-Mems that should select a background source, and some E-Mems that mustn't.)
