How to do some of those complicated effects you've been dreaming about

Increased (Wide-Range) Defocus on Transform Engine

This is probably more of a "trick" than an "effect". Wide-Range Defocus is available on Kalypso Duo and HD, but not on Classics. This is a work-around for us poor Classic users.

This effect requires the use of TWO Transform Engines on TWO M/E partitions. (If you have an Aux output Re-Entered as an input, these can be two partitions of the same M/E.) Note that therefore there is two frames of video delay added, one frame from each TE.

On the first partition, set up the source through a Transform Engine with Size set to 50%. Blur this channel of TE. Use this partition on the keyer of a second partition, through a Transform Engine with Size set to 200%. Blur this channel also. (If you need to fly it around, add appropriate Crop to this TE.) For example, M1B (the secondary output from M/E1) could have the first TE. Then M2B (the secondary output from M/E2) could have M1B as a source, Transformed and Blurred.

The trick of shrinking one TE back and another zooming it up is what gives the Wide Range to this defocus. You can vary the amount of Defocus finely with the second TE’s Blur feature, or vary it coarsely by altering the ratios of the two TEs. Just make the figures complementary (eg 50% / 200% or 33% / 300%).
