What do you mean, Unused Mix/Effects Rows?

My organisation has purchased quite a few Kalypsos, with most controlled from a K2 (compact) control panel. We have purchased only three Mix/Effects cards: M/E1, M/E2 and Pgm/Pst, and there are two physical "Banks" from which to control them via delegation. When a Bank is delegated to M/E3, there is no hardware to control. What a waste! So here are some suggestions on what can be done to make something happen when M/E3 is delegated. By the way, you can pick up some brilliant ideas here, even if you have the large K4 control panel.
  • Warning Message
Make the Source Name Display say "There is no M/E3!"
You will need 14 unused Source numbers. For example, Sources 71 to 84. Name the first of these Sources "T", the second "h", the third "e" etc. Ignore the spaces. This naming is preferably done in "Suite Prefs" in the "Source Patch" menu, but it could conceivably be done as an Engineering Setup change.
In "User Prefs | Button Mapping", with only M/E3 delegated as the target, map all the buttons to "None", with the exception of these 14 Sources.
    ··There··is··no··M/E3!··
Of course, you could have any message, such as "No Stupid, not that one!" The K2 Panel is limited to 24 characters including the "None" Source to represent spaces. "None" is always displayed as green on black, so the display colours for these 14 Sources look best set the same. If you want a different colour in your display (Red or Amber or an inverted Green), then you will need to create Sources also for the spaces in your message, so you can give a colour to them (ie, use 24 Sources).

  • Macro Control
Attach Macros to each button on the A-row of M/E3 so you have a dedicated Macro controller.
Take 24 unused Sources (such as 61 to 84) and map them to M/E3. In "Suite Prefs | Source Patch", name those Sources to describe what the Macro on that button does. For example, "Zoom Up", "Shot Clk", "EMem 25", "Boxes", "Make Coffee". The end result is that when you delegate the M/E Bank to M/E3, you see a display of (pseudo) "Macro Names" above the buttons that initiate the Macro.

Note that holding down the [Macro Deleg] button and pressing any Source Select button on the M/E Bank's Key1 row will make the M/E Bank the "normal" Macro Controller; the M/E Source Name Display will show Macro names and the M/E Key1 row will initiate Macros. But there it is the physical Bank that takes control, not the delegated M/E. My method turns only the delegated M/E3 into a Macro Controller, so you can use M/E1 and M/E2 as normal. You can combine this usage with other functions, such as bus linking sources etc.

  • Aux Bus Control
There are four busses just sitting there, able to be pressed at will without an Alt-modifier (Key1, Key2, BG-A, BG-B). Why not link those busses to four Aux busses, and you instantly have four more Aux Bus controllers at hand. You can't select any M/E3 outputs (which you wouldn't want to, since there's no hardware!) or more seriously, PGM, since there's no button for it. The Bus Link menu allows you to select an alternate Source on the Controlled bus, so you can simply substitute a PGM output for an unneeded button.

  • Extend your Program Preset Row so you never need to "Shift" to get Sources
Link all busses from M/E3 (controlling) to PGM/PST (controlled). Set Shift Preferences for M/E3 to be "Shifted" and Source Name Display for M/E3 to show only "Shifted". Now when you delegate the other Bank to M/E3, it is an extension of the Program/Preset row. Pressing a button on M/E3 (without the need to hold the Shift-Modifier) will result in a Shifted Source being selected on the Corresponding Program/Preset bus. Now you have single-button access to 48 Sources - even more than on the bigger K4 (bloated) panel! (Of course, a K4 operator could do this between PP and ME3 and get 64 sources, so we're not going to boast too loudly.) This one is my personal favourite - 9 out of 10!
