NEWSGROUPS & MAILING LISTS
INTRODUCTION
Like much else in cyberspace, around 90% of postings on newsgroups or through mailing lists is plain garbage - spam-mail, flame-wars, unqualified opinions, completely useless comments and so on. This often makes it difficult to derive any benefit from these schemes. On the other hand, they can be a great way of gaining and providing information about the things that you, as an individual, are interested in. So it's worth taking your chances with them - at least occasionally.
Newsgroups can also be a good source for files, since practically any typeof file can be transferred either to or from them. But after a couple of days you have to start hunting for them.
NEWSGROUPS
There are tens of thousands of newsgroups available on the internet - however your ISP's news provider won't cover all of them. The other problem with accessing newsreaders is that the postings cover only a recent period - usually over the last four or so days.
This is where you may have to do a bit of searching around online. Postings stay on the net and many internet search engines are capable of searching for old newsgroup postings. Depending on where you look, you may even fined entire groups of postings reformatted and archived as FAQ's (frequently asked questions) or for sheer posterity's sake.
MAILING LISTS
Although I haven't made it too clear elsewhere, this page of the site is also devoted to mailing lists. These are more generally passive, since they generally result in occasional emailing of news and announcements to subscribers. Always make a point of unsubscribing if the postings become too frequent or don't satisfy your requirements.
