Life and Executive Coaching The Journey Begins

The Best Getting Better

Gilbert Labour's 2010 New Year's Message

Be True to Yourself

The only thing to be said for your belated honesty to yourself is that your dreams will cease to haunt you

If being true to yourself means hurting others, not following on a path that has been laid out by someone else (to their anger, disappointment) and (seemingly) being a free spirit without ambition but then so be it.

Ambition is the enemy of being true to yourself when that ambition doesn't flow from the inside. There is only one thing that really matters after all is said and done and that is to be true to yourself. When you're not you're living your life by proxy where substitutions occur at every second and minute for what (who) really matters.

What will happen if you deny the truth to yourself is that you will be reminded over and over when your destiny lies. By your dreams principally if you're in a major state of denial. This reminder isn't gentle. It is brutal because it is true. It is made worse by the realisation of the vast amount of time wasted. By the pain you feel when you see your happiness, true destiny before you. Your heart is something you should not risk lying to you. Your heart is something you take great risk at your peril lying to. You will be found out every time. Your dreams will reveal the lies to you.

What comes to you when you're true to yourself?

Being true to yourself means doing what you feel is right for you and for you alone. It doesn't mean to deny your talent and do something else. Your talent is you for better or worse so you have to assimilate your talent into your happiness stream of both conscious and unconscious thought.

You might hurt others. You will hurt others people you love. You will be described as selfish. You're probably not fulfilling someone else's agenda and so could make someone very angry. But in the final analysis you should be happier because you're doing what you want with who you want when you want it. It's a scary world when you do this. You're pretty much alone when doing this because not many people do this and follow their heart. They are all too busy wasting time doing something they hate. The key to making this move to truth is that your time on this earth is strictly limited. Your health will one day fail. That is not the time to realise your mistake. You must realise your mistake whilst you have the health and the time not to correct it (too much has probably changed since the initial error) but to acknowledge it, to truthfully admit your erroneous ways and live according to your precepts.

Another way of thinking of this is living according to your set of values. This is more difficult that you think. Because the desire to do whatever is so strong and trying to put a structure around it so difficult most people drift without the aid of structure unless it is provided by religion. My thought is that one should provide one's own religion. Your structure in effect becomes your religion. There is nothing in organised religion that you can't do for yourself. You need to provide yourself with a vision and the means to achieve that vision. You need belief not in God but in yourself. You're your own god.

What comes to you when you're not true to yourself?

You're sad, depressed, repressed, thwarted, denied and frustrated all beneath a thin veneer of superficial satisfaction.

You can live your life according to the whims and dictates of others (which may have become you through the power of influence, duty, debt owed) but eventually this catches up with you. The catching up is sudden. It jolts you from your comfort zone into an empty painful space where this reality is in your face. Those that truly love you may not mean to hold you to ransom via the power of influence or duty but they do so because this is a fail-safe (for a time anyway) mechanism to hold on to you in the absence of love. Love should be the only glue but sometimes love needs a helping hand and influence/duty can harden the glue. But by doing do it makes the glue brittle and prone to cracking.

Fear stops you from being true to your inner guide. This fear perpetuates itself by emphasising the risk to your current 'happiness' by following an alternate course. Fear perpetrates this hoax because it can, because we are weak.

There is no balance between living your live the way you want to live it and living it the way someone else wants you to live it. These are two ends of the emotional polar regions and it is only one or the other. One end is truth and the other is lies. This is one of those situations where these are absolutes you can't merge them or meld them. They exist as ideals possibly but they should be what we strive for. You can live a live where you're bound by duty and influence and every now and then do something to break out by being 'naughty' but that makes no sense. To keep yourself in jail and only allow yourself a breath of fresh air every now and them. There is after all no gate, no walls, no jailer in this jail except fabricated by yourself by your fear by your false sense of duty.

This revelation more like a catharsis is a good thing. The core of it is an empty feeling but that is the price you pay for living out someone else's life.

After long years of living a lie, it's not as if you're going to make everything right by changing your life around to where you think it should be. If it involves no one else then perhaps. But people don't hold their lives in limbo for 10 or 20 years waiting for you to get your act together. So even though it is good to realise what a mistake your life has been, no one else can really help you regain the years. These are gone forever. The only thing to be said for your belated honesty to yourself is that your dreams will cease to haunt you.

New Year's Resolutions for 2005

By their very nature New Year's resolutions are set in an atmosphere of fun and excitement and are usually completed/achieved quite quickly (1 month or so) or not at all

There is a reason why most New Year's resolutions are broken, some almost immediately on waking up the next day with a hangover, some a few days into the New Year when the magnitude of the task you have set yourself dawns, some perhaps up to 3 or 4 weeks after being made when the effort or work required is realised. In all cases the resolution is broken because the change required from the normal day to day routine of work and home is just too great. It is too great a departure from the normal daily routine. A resolution that is a change both in direction and magnitude has no hope of succeeding unless an interim transition takes place that provides a period of preparation for the changeover. The previous advice can be summarised in the following points ---

  • A New Year's resolution is a life coaching program no less and requires the same effort a life coaching program might take to achieve. For example if you are 250 kilos, smoke 2 packets of cigarettes a day and drink a quart of whiskey making a New Year's resolution to get to 80 kilos and to stop drinking and smoking and become a champion runner or salsa dancer is just an impossible target. It is impossible because there are a huge number of interim measures and steps that need to take place before one can begin to even think about these long term goals. In fact these goals might take a year or more to achieve especially if you also have a job to hold down, you have a partner and family responsibilities. By their nature New Year's resolutions are set in an atmosphere of fun and excitement and are usually completed/achieved quite quickly (1 month or so) or not at all.

  • Do not underestimate the inertia of your current job, your chosen role at work and at home, your partner, your friends and colleagues and associates, your current habits, your current tastes and your family responsibilities. This is enough for most people to manage without having to think, manage and achieve a whole set of New Year's resolutions on top of that to achieve.

  • Make the New Year's resolution something that is not too radically different from what it is that you do and are now. If it is too different it will never get off the ground. If you are an office worker and currently locked to a 30 year mortgage in the suburbs with a wife and children and weigh 140 kilos then making a New Year's that you will become a band leader or dance teacher or builder is too far out of your known performance envelope that it will take more than a New Year's resolution to change yourself.

  • Keep the interim goals quite small. Dig a shovel full at a time don't worry about the big hole you need to get to. Rather than saying you will lose 30 kilos make losing 5 kilos your goal and running 2k rather than 20k.

  • Your body shape, your past excesses, your health, your weight, your looks and your age poses some limitations on your New Year's resolutions. Be aware of those. There is no need to be held back because you're not handsome or pretty but be aware some areas of life are denied to you - being a model for example. This is a fact and must be acknowledged. There should be no unhappiness or frustration attached to that. If for example you are a heavy smoker then aiming to be a top trumpet player may not be within your sphere of possibility.

  • There are some things that with lots of time and given good health and your dedication and tenacity you can change. These medium to longer term goals are not normally within the bounds of a New Year's resolution. These include changing your body shape (within reason), improving your health by diet and exercise, reducing your weight (healthily and within reasonable bounds). Your cannot change your looks radically without plastic surgery and of course you cannot change your age (but you can hide it).

    Coaching Programs

    555 Program

The 555 Program is complementary to the 333 Program and is part of a family of programs called The Numbered Series, a simplification of a plethora of products, services and programs into a number of specifically targeted set of programs that target a very specific audience with a limited amount of time and resources to devote to a life and executive coaching program. The programs covers a set of goals over a set period for a specific (one time only) fee.

The key goals of the 555 Program is to be able to run 5k in 5 months, to solve 5 life coaching issues or problems in 5 months and to investigate and resolve 5 executive coaching problems in 5 months.

    Life Coaching Portal Programs

Beyond the existing Diamond program being run on the portal, a series of additional programs are being developed to be run for specific audiences and which have very clear targets and goals. These include the following.

    The 555 Program

Gilbert Labour, will personally run this program. It will probably take in the region of 10 suitable people and run for 5 months. The program is multi-faceted and covers three main streams a fitness stream, a life coaching stream dealing with personal issues and an executive stream to supercharge your work, business and corporate environment.

  • The first stream is a fitness element. The goal is to be able to run 5k (non stop) in five months and be able to lose 5 kilos in the process. This is a modest achievement and is considered a healthy approach to fitness generally. I am a former fitness instructor and dance teacher and can provide guidance in this area. You will need a clearance from your doctor if you're over 45.

  • The second stream is a life coaching element. The goal of the life coaching is to investigate a number of current personal issues and focus on 5 for resolution in 5 months. One to be resolved or at least worked on each month.

  • The third stream is an executive coaching element. The goal of this element is to come up with five goals or issues to be dealt with in the 5 months of the program. These could involve working towards a promotion, changing jobs, changing careers, leaving the corporate environment and developing a small business. For the hard core executives and other corporate thrivers and survivors there will be a number of areas that include executive interview training and executive decision making that can be covered. There are many others and these can be chosen based on your current goals. The aim of this stream is canvass all the possibilities and focus on only 5 and work through each one.

The cost of the program varies. To take part on a one-on-one basis with Gilbert Labour will cost $5000. To take part in a group setting will cost $2000. Individual programs can start at anytime considered suitable.

To provide this program on a company wide basis (more than 10 people), please call Gilbert Labour for a quote.

Please call Gilbert Labour on 0409 223 436 if you would like to take part. Further information on the 555 Program is available from the portal.

    General Information

  • I also do a small amount of pro-bono work in the area of life coaching. I belong to the Life Coaching Pro Bono Group (LCPBG), a group of life coaches I am putting together to do this type of work for people in need but who may not be able to afford the services of a full fee life coach. We make allowances for your circumstances and also on the understanding that once you're back on your feet, your capacity to contribute to your life coaching will also improve.

Generally speaking, we will set clear goals, we will put in place plans to attain those goals, we will execute the plan effectively. We will monitor and survey the results and ensure our goals are met. In most cases, we will envelope what we are trying to achieve into a coaching programme.

I operate flexibly taking into account the needs of the client as we progress with the programme.

Please call me on my mobile (0409 223 436) for a confidential discussion to begin the journey of self discovery.

You may prefer to email me your situation and your desired goals. Your details will be kept strictly confidential.
