A man in his forties holding it together is a miracle

Anything that distracts him from the main game - which is to be stable, happy, productive and effective - is to be ruthlessly eliminated from his life

There is no such thing as out of control situations, events or relationships - only out of control people and this may be unrelated to the situation, event or relationship

The no. one goal of a married man in his 20s and 30s is to have his mortgage paid by the time he is 40. There is no other important goal. This is quite a big ask because a mortgage usually takes 30 years to pay and by the time he is forty he will usually have been paying for only 10, 15 years at most. Notwithstanding the case that most mortgages are re-negotiated after 7 years. If he does manage to pay it off totally, it will help him keep it together in his 40s.

A man in his forties holding it together is a miracle. A man in his forties shining is a force of nature, a hurricane, a cyclone, a tornado, an event. What are the keys to firstly hold the line and keep it from going to pieces and then once you've done that to move on and really shine, really perform, really out-perform your peers. A mid-life crisis notwithstanding, a man in his forties can achieve great things provided he keeps in mind the following key drivers of his performance.

  • Physical fitness is the no.1 driver. A man in his forties has a tendency to put on weight around his middle and the side, his level of activity tends to be reduced, his awareness of all that is around him is consequently reduced. Lack of activity makes worse the weight problem and more weight he puts on the less active he becomes thus becoming a vicious circle. The reason why a man in his forties performing at his peak is beyond a miracle is that the number of men in that age group working out regularly is quite a small proportion of the overall population. It is very rare that one comes across such a man in peak condition - slim, toned and very fit.

  • In your 20s picking your life partner is a key driver of your happiness and ability to hold it together in your 40s. It is the No. 2 driver. Choose very wisely. Most likely you will have to live with your choice literally for the next 50 years. You decide the selection criteria and weighting for each - beauty, manner and style, "niceness", accent, looks, age, body type, wealth or lack thereof, social class, education and her work, culture and ethnicity, country of origin, language. They all have a part to play in the right and wise decision. I do not mention love or sex. You will have to work out why I have done that for yourself. Choose solely on the basis of love and sex and you will have made a disastrous choice.

  • Eliminating financial problems and worries is the No. 3 for a peak performing man in his 40s. How this is done doesn't matter as long as it is done. A penny pinching man in his 40s is a misery, a miserable ungentlemanly man. Always under the hammer, always under tension, always living from pay day to pay day (if he has a job) or else living from government handout to handout. As most men in their 40s have a wife and children it is natural to assume they also need a house and most mortgages have a 30 year term. So in his forties he will still have a mortgage to pay. The one goal of a married man in his 20s and 30s is to have his mortgage paid by the time he is 40. There is no other important goal.

  • Keeping your stress, anxiety and depression especially work related, under control is the No. 4 driver. Use of physical fitness and a healthy diet low in sugar to help in this area works. But where these are mental health related issues then the help of a medical practitioner has to be sought.

  • Understanding the mechanism of addiction in your case is the No. 5 driver. Addiction to alcohol, tobacco, gambling, sex, distracting relationships and food must be acknowledged and understood in your case. Professional medical help must be sought if these originate from a mental or physical health issue or create a mental or physical health issue as an after effect of the addiction.

  • Having a steady, stable and low stress, low maintenance personal relationship with your partner is the No. 6 driver. A high maintenance relationship is one that continually upsets and distracts you from the main game - which is to be stable, happy, productive and effective. You need a partner who is stable and steadfast. There is no room for a flaky, highly string, mentally ill partner. You have total responsibility for your mental health not your partners. If you do then you take on the labors of Hercules at 40 and probably out of condition.

  • Eliminating emotional distractions is the No. 7 driver. This means not falling in love and having affairs with unsuitable people. Unsuitable people include people at work, in your social circle, people who are mentally unstable or want something from you that you cannot give them.

  • Having a set of goals that can sustain you over the next 1-2 years is a key insulator from the chills and ills of a miserable 4th decade and is the No. 8 driver. Ideally these goals should be related to and follow on from goals set earlier. There is nothing more difficult to achieve that to set yourself a goal for which you have no previous training, background or experience in. This lack of connection between the current major goal and the past is at the heart of failures in your 40s.

  • Understanding how situations can get out of control in your life is the No. 9 driver. By watching out for the danger signs you can stop problems at the root before they fester and get out of control. Based on my work on project management - Sane Project Management (SPM) - A Life and Executive Coaching Approach there is no such thing as out of control situations or events or projects for that matter, only out of control people. So understand how you get out of control, what are the causes and how does this usually come about?

  • Doing it alone for as long as you need to/want to is the No. 10 driver. A woman has a lifecycle and unless you're prepared to be part of the regeneration implied by that, you have no right no business down there. Do not have a woman in your life unless her lifecycle and yours coincide beautifully. If they are out of synch, then you will have problems at any age and in your 40s this is the worse kind of trouble you can have. An unhappy relationship with an unfulfilled and unsatisfied woman is the height of disunity and unhappiness. A woman who is a solid supportive partner is your aircraft carrier - anything that torpedoes that aircraft carrier should be hunted down by you and eliminated.

    Obesity and the roller coaster ride from nadir to zenith and back

    There are five journeys in obesity, which one are you on now?

    Why are there obese people when there are people starving in the world? Is obesity a medical problem rather than one of lack of self-control or perhaps even one using food for sexual/sensual gratification for masking (?) the real problems? How successful is someone who is 250 kilos at 'masking' or hiding the problem?

  • The five journeys is obesity are -

  • Getting there becoming obese, this is the easiest journey of all and happens almost without you knowing. This journey is on the road to death.

  • Staying there at a steady weight, this is a hard journey because the tendency is to put on more weight not less. This journey is a slow death.

  • The next journey is one into hell and that is on the road to putting on more and more weight. This is the last journey these people even embark on. This journey ends in death.

  • The penultimate journey and the one with the most difficulty starting is the road back away from obesity. The enormous journey back is not the problem but the first step back, the first gram lost. This journey is not a journey of weight loss but a journey to lose the fears and problems that the weight gain had temporarily put on the back burner. This second last journey is the life coaching journey and has much less to do with weight loss, exercise and fitness and more to do with facing problems in their real intensity and fury perhaps for the first time since the decision taken to embark on the first journey.

  • The last journey and that is to keep the weight at the target weight after the massive task of weight loss because again the tendency is to put the weight back on even faster than before and much much faster than it was lost. For every gram lost a kilo is put on.

  • Work with a life coach who understands your weight problem is not a weight problem but a personal problem posing, impersonating a weight problem. Someone who knows which journey you are on and can make sure you either move to the next healthy journey or stay at the healthy journey you're on.

    Coaching Programs

    555 Program

    The 555 Program is complementary to the 333 Program and is part of a family of programs called The Numbered Series, a simplification of a plethora of products, services and programs into a number of specifically targeted set of programs that target a very specific audience with a limited amount of time and resources to devote to a life and executive coaching program. The programs covers a set of goals over a set period for a specific (one time only) fee.

    The key goals of the 555 Program is to be able to run 5k in 5 months, to solve 5 life coaching issues or problems in 5 months and to investigate and resolve 5 executive coaching problems in 5 months.

    Life Coaching Portal Programs

    Beyond the existing Diamond program being run on the portal, a series of additional programs are being developed to be run for specific audiences and which have very clear targets and goals. These include the following.

    The 555 Program

    Gilbert Labour, will personally run this program. It will probably take in the region of 10 suitable people and run for 5 months. The program is multi-faceted and covers three main streams a fitness stream, a life coaching stream dealing with personal issues and an executive stream to supercharge your work, business and corporate environment.

  • The first stream is a fitness element. The goal is to be able to run 5k (non stop) in five months and be able to lose 5 kilos in the process. This is a modest achievement and is considered a healthy approach to fitness generally. I am a former fitness instructor and dance teacher and can provide guidance in this area. You will need a clearance from your doctor if you're over 45.

  • The second stream is a life coaching element. The goal of the life coaching is to investigate a number of current personal issues and focus on 5 for resolution in 5 months. One to be resolved or at least worked on each month.

  • The third stream is an executive coaching element. The goal of this element is to come up with five goals or issues to be dealt with in the 5 months of the program. These could involve working towards a promotion, changing jobs, changing careers, leaving the corporate environment and developing a small business. For the hard core executives and other corporate thrivers and survivors there will be a number of areas that include executive interview training and executive decision making that can be covered. There are many others and these can be chosen based on your current goals. The aim of this stream is canvass all the possibilities and focus on only 5 and work through each one.

    The cost of the program varies. To take part on a one-on-one basis with Gilbert Labour will cost $5000. To take part in a group setting will cost $2000. Individual programs can start at anytime considered suitable.

  • I also do a small amount of pro-bono work in the area of life coaching. I belong to the Life Coaching Pro Bono Group (LCPBG), a group of life coaches I am putting together to do this type of work for people in need but who may not be able to afford the services of a full fee life coach. We make allowances for your circumstances and also on the understanding that once you're back on your feet, your capacity to contribute to your life coaching will also improve.

    Generally speaking, we will set clear goals, we will put in place plans to attain those goals, we will execute the plan effectively. We will monitor and survey the results and ensure our goals are met. In most cases, we will envelope what we are trying to achieve into a coaching programme.
