Developing and Understanding the Creative Process

By the Principal of Tarmace Pty Ltd

Thought No. 1

We cannot hope to develop the creative process in us if we do not understand its genesis, its formation, its germination, its gestation, its birth, its upbringing, its loss of credibility, its supplanting by another better idea and its death and how all these transformations are connected. Once we do understand these, then we can begin to hope that we may intervene at various stages to help it along. Probably development is too grandiose or ambitious a term. We may not need a complete understanding of the process, we can interfere, we can interpose, we can artificially seed the mother if we know exactly how to do it we do not need to know why it works or how it works as long as what we do works that is enough for now.

I find I am at my most creative and productive best when I have come up with an idea or a thought but that thought is still attached to the being or beast that begat it. In the sense that not only do I have access to the thought or idea but I also have access to an inestimable rich blood supply of the mother that gave birth to the idea. When that is the case and I sit down at the keyboard to put the idea down I find that that I can really go into detail about the idea because the baby (idea) is still attached to the mother (what gave rise to the idea) via the umbilical cord. The mystery is not understanding this process but understanding how the mother got germinated in the first place and how that then led to the propagation of the idea. This is something I will be exploring as we go along with this page.

I also find that once I am tapping into the creative life force, this universal creative Amazon I amaze myself with how previously ideas that I took for granted as being unconnected or unrelated and not thought about in the same breadth suddenly grown synapses and wonderful, exciting, thrilling connections are made. This was the case when I made the connection between project management process disconnects and thinking of it in terms of forensic analysis. I had the thought that perhaps that may be an idea worth exploring but I never knew if there was worth pursuing a connection there but I remember coming back from a run and sitting and suddenly it all fell into place into why the disconnect occurred.

I am now living this creative fact of life because when I was quite ill a couple of months back I filled two large notebooks with lots and lots of notes, ideas, thoughts, principles and directions for my theories. I now come back to this 2 months later and I am at a total loss to understand what it was I was thinking about when I put those particular words down. The idea has become irrevocably detached from the mother and I find all I can do is put the words of the idea down but I can't for the life of me drill down or illuminate or go into detail or come up with an example to illustrate the idea.

Thought No. 2

The creative process in application to the development of Sane Project Management (SPM). A study in applied creative process.
