Vosonic X’s-Drive Super VP6210 Firmware Upgrading Information

Back to Main VP6210 Page

There's always two firmware upgrade areas to watch for. The PS2002 upgrades and the DSP upgrades. PS2002 firmware handles the card reading part of the device, DSP firmware handles the general device operation and hard drive operation.

PS2002 upgrade method for card reader, and apparently something to do with hard drive size.

DSP upgrade method  for disk and general operation (both PS2002 and DSP must be done to keep the unit up to date).

The list of main firmware DSP updates and what they did

PS2002 is now at V1.0D and is upgraded by using the application program on a host PC.

The DSP firmware is now at V1.2.8 and is updated by copying the appropriate xxx.MMV file to the VP6210 hard drive and then doing the upgrade with the VP6210 off line. See down below for the DSP upgrade procedure.

Be aware that the VP6210, VP6230, VP6300 VP6310 and others(?) may all use the same basic firmware, but the firmware files are not interchangeable due to functional differences in the devices. It is advisable to save all the firmware file versions as they appear, and they can be kept on your PC for emergencies and also kept on the VP6210 etc unit so you can swap between firmware versions to test features and faults. I have kept the VP6210 versions since V105 but only the V118 and up versions should be kept now as at V118 the folder structure changed. Email Vosonic if you want any older firmware, they usually oblige.

Warning: Make sure you only use FR0AGxxx files to attempt upgrades to the VP6210. After a certain version there is a check built in to prevent accidental upgrades with, say, VP6230 firmware. Before that, the wrong firmware could be loaded with the result of loss of features. One case I had to deal with had FR0AH123 firmware loaded over FR0AG111 firmware. This had the effect of making the LCD all white, the unit still could be used but only with a TV attached to see what was happening. Any attempt to reload any FR0AGxxx firmware was blocked by the FR0AH123 firmware. So we had to obtain from Vosonic an old or modified version of the H type firmware that didn't have a version check and load that over the FR0AH123 firmware, and then load the correct FR0AG123 firmware again to get it all working OK. It looked like a hardware failure, but was only a firmware muddle. Be careful!

From 16th February 2007 Vosonic has 0A 1.2.8 available for download. Some features added and fixes made.

As from about September 2007 the discontinued Vosonic items have disappeared from their site, but if you email them they will provide links to the downloads for your model.

The official information......

Firmware for discontinued products  (like the VP6210)
ftp://59.124.166.214/Firmware/

Or ftp://59.124.166.214/Firmware/VP6210/

Before accessing the website, please login:
User Name: vouser
Password: vouser65236

This page contains a list of all firmware available for the discontinued models. At last try in late October 2007, this username password combination failed to work, so it is always best to email Vosonic to get the firmware updates, and in doing so tells them how much that information is needed.
For the contact email, go to their 'Contact Us' page found from http://www.vosonic.com/

Logically if ftp://59.124.166.214/Firmware/VP6210/ contains the VP6210 firmware then ftp://59.124.166.214/Firmware/VP6230/ contains the VP6230 firmware and so on for your model. But again, if you are stopped from accessing it somehow, always email Vosonic and they are quite happy to send you the links needed. They are very cooperative, but a bit nutty in removing direct access to their discontinued firmware. I'll try again to get them to put the old links back in place.

Earlier I did the latest PS2002 firmware upgrade found at Vosonic.

I then used Win2000 SP4 with latest Rollup installed and the upgrade worked for me. Also later tried the upgrade program on a WinXP system and it interfaced OK with the VP6210 but of course I couldn't proceed with an actual upgrade as it had already been done on the Win2000 PC.

PS2002 Upgrade Method (must do this to keep Card Reader firmware up to date)

Download the upgrade zip file from http://www.vosonic.com/index.php?PA=support and find your unit (it may be under discontinued products) and then  look for "PS2002 Firmware V1.0D" (or later version when it happens at some time in the future).  The only comment attached to V1.0B is that it allows up to 120gig hard drives. And V1.0C says "Add the support of SDHC SD V2.0 memory cards". Now V1.0D adds ability to handle SDHC cards and xD M and H type 2gig cards.

Unzip the file
Run the program Ps0AV44m.exe that is extracted from that zip file (for V1.0D)
You get "User ISP Update Data Dialog" with some info, click OK as per figure below.

Then you get the "USB Device Upgrade F/W" window below, tick the ISP_ENA box, then click the Win9xISP button as shown on the figure below and a progress window briefly shows that some action is happening. There is no Win2000/XP box as yet, but trust me, I did this on my Win2000 system at first and it worked OK and equally it does work OK on WinXP as this latest set of screens was with WinXP.

Before (shows Inq Revision  at V1.0C )

Now the progress screen appears briefly....

And then it ends up like above...... so then close the window.

Dismount the VP6210 via the green arrow thingy at the bottom right of your desktop (that's for Win2000 and WinXP).

When Windows says it is OK to disconnect the device, then disconnect the USB cable and then press the VP6210 Reset button near the AC power adapter input and the unit powers down. Need a toothpick or ball-point pen to do that.

Power it up again and plug it in and Windows now discovers that you have connected a new device type of VP6210 and goes through its own internal new installation stuff. Wait a couple of minutes for that to settle down.

If you now run the program Ps0AV44m.exe again after the upgrade you should get this...

Press OK to first screen and now get this...

The line Inq Revision shows the new version number V1.0D of the firmware just loaded and now SDHC and large xD M and H type cards can be read.

The internal operational firmware needs to be updated to the latest version found on the Internet at http://www.vosonic.com/index.php?PA=support and click on Support and then on the individual unit to see the list of downloads available.

All upgrades include all the improvements in earlier upgrades, so only the latest has to be performed to bring it all up to date.

Vosonic have tidied their download page in that the 0A series of firmware is only shown. The 06 firmware version was a rare one so was removed. That seems to have happened in response to an email I sent asking about confusion between 0A and 06 versions and what were they used for. Contact Vosonic to arrange availability of firmware versions other than the 0A series.

To Update VP6210 DSP Firmware

This update method basically is the same for VP6210, VP6230, VP6300, VP6310 but of course only use the firmware package appropriate to your device. Below I use VP6210 as the example.

Using the VP6210 Options menu, check the current firmware level. Units bought in late May 2005 all seem to be at 0A-1.1.5 already, at some time after early August 2005 they should start to be delivered with 0A-1.1.8 and of course at V1.2.0 and up with the latest sales from late September 2005 on.

Some units are reported as having 06 series firmware instead of 0A series. This is rare and you need to contact Vosonic directly to get the firmware updates.

If the unit is 0A-1.0.34 and below (rare now)

  1. Go to http://www.vosonic.com/index.php?PA=support and find  the individual unit (it may be under discontinued products) and download the latest firmware. It is currently at 0A-1.2.8 and the file needed is FR0AG128.MMV and is contained within the downloaded Zip file.
  2. Copy the FR0AG128.MMV file to the root directory of a Compact Flash card. (Untested, but it may also work with any type memory card). The card of course can be in a card reader/writer or in the camera or in the USB connected VP6210 to copy this file. Make sure it is FR0AG firmware and not FR0AH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  3. Disconnect the VP6210 from the computer if it was connected, make sure the battery is fully charged or make sure the AC power adapter is connected. Plug the Compact Flash card into the VP6210.
  4. Hold the ‘Menu’ button while pressing the ‘Power’ button.
  5. The “Checking Firmware” message will show on the screen.
  6. While still holding the ‘Menu’ button, release the ‘Power’ button, then release the ‘Menu’ button.
  7. The question “Update Firmware?” will appear, press the button. The (tick) button is called the SEL (select) button in some of the VP6210 literature and screen displays.
  8. When the “Successfully Updated” message appears, press the button to power off the unit.
  9. Power on again and check the firmware level using the menu for reassurance.

If the unit is 0A-1.0.39 and up. (Normal situation now)

  1. Go to http://www.vosonic.com/index.php?PA=support and find  the individual unit (it may be under discontinued products) and download the latest firmware. It is currently at 0A-1.2.8 and the file needed is FR0AG128.MMV and is contained within the downloaded Zip file.
  2. Copy the FR0AG128.MMV file to the root directory of the VP6210 hard drive while the VP6210 is connected to the computer, use Windows Explorer to do this. Make sure it is FR0AG firmware and not FR0AH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  3. Dismount and disconnect the VP6210 from the computer, make sure the battery is fully charged or make sure the AC power adapter is connected.
  4. Power on the unit and using the cursor controls, locate the FR0AG128.MMV file and press the (tick) button to start the upgrade process.
  5. The question “Update Firmware?” will appear, press the button, the firmware upgrade takes place with a % shown, it takes 40 seconds.
  6. When the “Successfully Updated” message appears, press the button to power off the unit.
  7. Power on again and check the firmware level using the Options menu for reassurance.

After any upgrade.

0A-1.1.8 alters the folder arrangement from 0A-1.1.5, it's best to back up the VP6210 to your PC, then do the 0A-1.1.8 upgrade, then do an offline Format to get the folders the way that Vosonic now want them, and then restore any files from the PC to the new folders. There's many changes in V1.2.0 - V1.2.8 but the folder system seems to be the same as V1.1.8 up so a format is not needed. But if a little paranoid, it would be a good idea to backup all stuff on the VP6210 and then do a self format via the Options menu, or now with latest firmware, select the hard drive and press Menu to get the Format option to show.

Make sure all functions worked as they did before. If there’s any changes to basic folder names required by the new firmware, you can either add those folders online using Windows Explorer, or use the VP6210 built-in Format function. The Format of course will wipe all data from the disk, so make sure that you backed up anything important beforehand. The Format also adds the appropriate folders that the firmware expects to find.

Disaster Alert: If for some reason the VP6210 ends up "unbootable" due to a corrupted file or upgrade, then put a copy of the *.MMV file onto the root directory of a CF card and then power up the VP6210 while holding the Menu button and the unit attempts to reload the firmware from the CF card. For this reason always keep the old firmware files so earlier versions can be reloaded. Email me for older versions.

Feel free to email me with any questions or complaints or errors that you find ...........
