Vale Astrid

† September 4, 2006

In memoriam by Donald Arthur

Astrid Varnay was one of the great hochdramatische sopranos of the 20th century. Debuting at the Met in 1941, she sang in all of the world’s major opera houses, performing Wagner, Strauss, Verdi and many other romantic and contemporary composers. A major factor in the successful revival of the Bayreuth Festival in the 1950s and 60s, Varnay later specialised in character roles in a second career that extended up to 1995.

Renowned for her powerful voice, nuanced acting and arresting stage presence, Varnay’s reputation has grown even greater with the increasing availability of her studio and live recordings. These pages are a tribute to her artistry and life.
